50% of Broadband Connections set to be Mobile by 2013

Analyst says the surge in mobile broadband sales is a concern to home broadband providers, and predicts that almost half of broadband connections will be mobile in next five years.

Sales of mobile broadband dongles this year have outrun industry expectations, and left fixed broadband providers worried for their propositions.

We have recently seen Virgin Media, known for their superfast home broadband finally dip into the mobile broadband market with the release of their USB modem to try and keep ahead of the game and competition.

Telecoms adviser Analysys Mason said in a report last week 47 per cent of European broadband subscriptions will be mobile by 2013, and nearly a quarter of account holders will use mobile only solutions.

It claimed fixed DSL broadband subscriber additions (digital data transmission over the wires of a local telephone network) are drying up, and undercut by mobile propositions.

Broadband-onthemove predict that unless mobile broadband speeds and download limits increase considerably, home broadband providers will win many of their old customers back when fibre optic broadband is launched in 2012.
