PAYG mobile Internet access is also available for a fixed price per day. This will usually be a few pounds and come with a set amount of data allowance. This is a great way to use the Internet for those of you who rarely needs mobile Internet, but it allows you get yourself hooked up to a 3G network when you do.
What is a Wi-Fi Hotspot?
A Wi-Fi hotspot, location or access point is where you can access wireless broadband Internet using a wireless enabled device.
Hotspots use wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi). They broadcast a standard wireless frequency (up to 100 metres) that connects your equipment to the location's Internet connection. It's really that simple!
There are three main types of wireless access point in the UK at the moment:
• Wi-Fi hotspot: This is an Internet access point in a public location such as a café or hotel.
• BT FON location: People share their home Wi-Fi access with other FON members
• Outdoor coverage area: A public wireless network in many UK cities.
You'll find Wi-Fi hotspots in a wide range of locations including airport lounges and terminals, bars and pubs, BT payphones, cafés/coffee shops, city centres, clubs, colleges, conference centres and exhibition venues, health clubs, hotels, law courts, libraries, museums, motorway service stations, railway stations, restaurants, shopping areas/stores, town halls, universities... and many more.
What is a Mobile Broadband Dongle?
A mobile broadband dongle is a device that attaches to your laptop or PC via your USB port. It allows you to access the Internet via your mobile broadband connection.
Basically, a USB dongle is a mobile modem which provides you instant access via the 3G network.
Mobile broadband is great for flexibility as they allow users to access the Internet wherever and whenever they need to.
What is a Fair Usage Policy?
Fair usage policies limit “heavy” and “excessive” mobile broadband Internet users, usually at peak times to ensure that the best quality broadband is available to the maximum amount of users.
“Heavy” and “excessive” users are usually those who use file sharing software and download large files such as movies on a daily basis. These users take up excessive bandwidth slowing the connection down for everyone else.
Usually after a few months of excessive use, your Internet provider will notify you that they believe your usage is too much and encourage you to refrain from downloading large files at peak times. If you don’t take any notice, this is when your provider will slow your connection down at peak times.
In a small number of rare cases, excessive users have had their Internet connections terminated so be sure bear this mind!
